Ranji Trophy Super League: Tamil Nadu trounce Orissa

Tamil Nadu trounced Orissa by an innings and 41 runs on the last day of their four-day Ranji Trophy Super League Group-B match at MA Chidambaram Stadiu9m in Chennai today. This was overall 67th loss and 34th by innings margin in a total of 165 Ranji Trophy matches for Orissa and their first defeat in the only match against Tamil Nadu.

Orissa got off to a vulnerable start as they were bowled out for 194 after captain Sanjay Raul won the toss and elected to bat. The bright aspects of the Orissa first-innings were a half-century each by P Jayachandra (58, 91b, 8x4) and Gautam Gopal (71, 94b, 11x4, 2x6). T Kumaran did maximum damage to the Orissa innings, bagging six wickets.

In reply, host Tamil Nadu rode on a century each by Hemang Badani (122) and S Reuben Paul (100) to declare at 483 for seven. Debasis Mohanty was most successful Orissa bowler, taking three wickets for 91 runs.

After conceding a first-innings lead of 289 runs, Orissa put up slightly better performance in the second essay with Pravanjan Mullick (83, 134b, 15x4, 1x6) and skipper Raul (62, 146b, 10x4) scoring a half-century each. But the two knocks proved too little for the visitors, who lost the match by getting all out for 248.
